Module 4 ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level v4.0

The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level v4.0 (CTFL): 4 hours, the same for every track and every role, after the basics. Recorded at Gate 0.

Purpose

The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level gives every participant the standard vocabulary and principles of software testing, as used by testing teams around the world, and a recognised certificate. It is also the prerequisite for Module 5 ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Automation Engineer.

Outcomes

  • Use the standard ISTQB testing vocabulary and principles.
  • Hold the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level v4.0 certificate.

Session plan

# Session Duration Format Who
1 Processing: register, book the certification test, and get access to the video training 1 hour Self-study Each person, with the training lead

Each person's sessions add up to 4 hours.

Activities

  1. With the training lead, register for the certification test, book a date, and get access to the video training.
  2. Watch the video training. Note every term you do not know, and look it up in the syllabus.
  3. Try a sample exam before the test.
  4. Sit the certification test.

Evidence

Evidence 4: the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level v4.0 certificate.

Assessment

The exam provider sets and marks the certification test. Gate 0 (hour 88) records the certificate. If a person does not pass, they agree more study with their mentor and resit before they start Module 5, because the Foundation Level is its prerequisite.

Is ISTQB certification still relevant?

Yes: ISTQB certification is still relevant, but it works mainly as a foundational credential, and as a filter that employers and HR teams use, rather than as a guarantee of practical, hands-on engineering skills. This programme uses it in that way: as shared vocabulary and a recognised credential, alongside the practical automation that every later module teaches.

Where ISTQB still matters

  • Entry-level testers and career switchers: it gives a structured learning path and standard terminology to people who have no formal computer science or quality assurance background.
  • Global and regulated industries: it remains highly valued, or formally required, in Europe, the Middle East, finance, government, and compliance-heavy enterprise sectors.
  • A common vocabulary: it gives distributed, global testing teams a shared language.

Where it falls short

  • Practical engineering: it does not teach modern technical skills such as test automation with Selenium or Playwright, API testing, or exploratory bug-finding. In this programme, the later modules teach those.
  • The shift to AI and automation: as the industry moves towards AI-assisted testing and rapid continuous delivery, practical project experience and tooling knowledge matter more to hiring managers than theoretical certificates. Beginners find value in it, but experienced automation engineers often put hands-on technical skills ahead of the credential.
